A departure point for Cromer Public School students is the focus of a dedicated Safer Schools plan for Waroon Road.
The Waroon Road Cromer Safer Schools Notification Plan went before Northern Beaches Council’s Local Transport Forum in August, with Council’s meeting records highlighting a separate attachment devoted to the proposal.
Buses gather after the bell
Cromer Public School fronts Carcoola Road, but Waroon Road forms part of its afternoon transport routine. The school’s travel information identifies the street as the departure point for buses, with a teacher supervising students as they board. Routes 601, 602, 605 and 676 are listed as leaving after the bell.
Timetable information for the 602N service, for example, shows a scheduled departure from Cromer Public School on Waroon Road at 3:02 p.m. before the bus travels via Fisher Road and South Creek Road.
The August notification plan brings another section of the school precinct into the local transport process, following earlier pedestrian-safety projects around Cromer Public School and nearby Cromer High School.
Safety works span the precinct
Previous works delivered pedestrian refuge islands at Ryrie Avenue and Fisher Road North and at Alfred Street and Ryrie Avenue. Council records show the improvements formed part of a wider school infrastructure program. Road-safety concerns had also prompted plans for changes immediately beside Cromer Public School.
In 2021, Council considered a raised intersection at Carcoola Road, Carawa Road and Lillihina Avenue, along with relocating an existing pedestrian crossing and adding crossings on Carcoola Road and Lillihina Avenue. The report said concerns had been received from residents and the school community.
The proposal also involved removing about three on-street parking spaces. Council records linked the project to Federal Stimulus funding available for pedestrian improvements around schools.
Crashes elsewhere in Cromer
Recent incidents involving young riders have kept school-travel safety in the local spotlight, although available Council material does not link them to the Waroon Road plan.
A 14-year-old girl was injured in May 2026 when her e-bike and an SUV collided at the Campbell Avenue pedestrian crossing near Evergreen Drive during the morning school commute. She was reportedly travelling towards Northern Beaches Secondary College’s Cromer Campus and was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition.
Another teenage rider was injured the following month at Fisher Road North and Ryrie Avenue. The 17-year-old was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition after his modified electric bicycle collided with a car turning into Ryrie Avenue.
A separate crash occurred outside Cromer Public School in April 2025 after a 22-year-old driver reportedly experienced a medical episode on Carcoola Road. The vehicle struck a parked car and pedestrian-crossing infrastructure before continuing into properties opposite the school. The driver was taken to Northern Beaches Hospital for assessment.
E-bikes reshape school travel
Growing e-bike use among Northern Beaches students has separately prompted work across the region on how young people travel to school.
The NSW Department of Education reported in June 2025 that Northern Beaches schools were dealing with increased student e-bike use. A workshop involving school leaders, Transport for NSW and Northern Beaches Council addressed safe school travel, e-bike storage, legal responsibilities and education for students, families and communities.
